Celebrating 20years of Spaceways Radio with Carlos Niño!

One of my earliest memories of Carlos Niño has to do specifically with Spaceways radio. It was about 7 years ago. I was working on an event with ArtDontSleep, running around from backstage, to stage, to ticket booth and back… regular event stuff. I held on to a question a close friend of mine had for him all night about a song he played on his show at least 5years prior.  I believe Carlos hosted this event or was DJing it or maybe perhaps he connected us with a particular musician, I don’t recall the specifics but the point is, he stuck around til the end of the night allowing me to ask him about this particular song. I doubted anyone would remember with the small amount of details my friend left me with but sure enough by the time we wrapped up the night and I drove home the song I asked about was in my inbox. I was shocked and incredibly thankful. I’m blessed to say that moments like these are not rare with Carlos Niño. Always connecting folks, building, guiding, continuously offering a wealth of information and inspiration.

2015 marks 20years of Spaceways Radio, we’re celebrating with Carlos and joining him Sundays 10pm-Midnight PST on KPFK as he counts down to the final 9 shows with special guests aligned every week.

I’m truly grateful for the extended opportunity to grow and share on the air!

………………………………….

March Calendar is about 99% confirmed.

………………………………….

It’s a true honor to pass my Sundays 10:00pm – Midnight Pacific time slot on to one of the greatest DJs of all time: J.ROCC! Please tune in to KPFK on Sunday, March 29th for the premier of his new program.

………………………………….

Carlos’ RADIO History:

“I started my first radio show, All At One Point*, on KPFK 90.7FM, Los Angeles in October 1995, after volunteering at the station as a student reporter and producer from Summer 1994*. All At One Point was focused on “Hip-Hop, Soul, Jazz, and World Rhythms.” While hosting the show on Wednesdays from 8:00pm – 10:00pm Pacific, I showcased some of my favorite contemporary artists and featured live in studio performances and interviews with a wide variety of legends, up and coming musicians, bands, and DJs.

DJ Organic, Hymnl and Jon Liu all co-hosted the show with me at different
times from 1995 – 1999. In October of 1999, after a 6 month hiatus, (following
the birth of my son Azul,) I returned to KPFK with a new sound and vision:
Spaceways Radio. On this program I explore(d) Psychedelic, Electronic,
Folk, New Age, and World Musics, and create(d) specials dedicated to
individual artists and bands, phases of the Zodiac, and years past.

Spaceways Radio air times:
Sundays 10:00pm – Midnight 1999 – 2003
Fridays 8:00pm – 10:00pm 2004 – 2010
Sundays 10:00pm – Midnight 2010 – 2015

I was the interim Host and DJ of other music programs on KPFK at the same
time that All At One Point and Spaceways aired. I’m a founding DJ of the internet radio station Dublab where many of my Spaceways Radio Archives are available. I was a monthly contributor to David Lynch Radio, and Scion Radio, and have made several special mixes for various BBC shows and channels, Red Bull Music Academy Radio, and other stations in Europe and Japan.

………………………………….

All At One Point* Named after Italo Calvino’s short story from Cosmicomics.

………………………………….

Summer 1994* Being a huge fan of KLON’s Jazz Programming, KXLU’s
Mike Nardone, Rob One’s Fly ID Show on KCSN, and KCRW’s Michael
Mixin Moore I was deeply inspired to get into radio. I listened to all the radio
I could, and was an avid record and cassette buyer. My first attempt to get into
radio was when I turned 16 in 1993, got my driver’s license and drove my Mom’s car to answer phones at KCRW. I did some introductory production assistance there too. Playlist entry, ticket give-away phone operator . . . I picked up food for the fund drive, etc.. While at the station I came across one of the coolest things ever – a folded card-stock printed guide to every public radio station in the United States, with dial numbers, call letters and cities. Being that I lived in Canoga Park, when I saw KPFK in North Hollywood on the list, I decided to check it out. I was always focused on being a Music Programmer, but got to do a few other little odd jobs in radio first . . .

………………………………….

Note: This was 100% my decision. KPFK has supported me hugely over the years! They haven’t interfered with my program at all – I’ve been free to play what I was inspired to, to interview and host whoever I wanted, and be myself! I was met with appreciation, enthusiasm and encouragement about my plans for leaving, and choosing the great DJ that will be taking over the time slot I’ve had. Please continue to support KPFK! Thank you!”

Minnie Riperton Tribute | July 12th | Grand Performances

ADVENTURES FROM PARADISE
A Tribute to Minnie Riperton
July 12th | Grand Performances | 8PM

On Saturday, July 12th, in the heart of downtown Los Angeles, The Decoders will be joined by a 20-piece ensemble that will include very special guest vocalists to celebrate the life and music of female soul icon Minnie Riperton. The event is entitled Adventures From Paradise and will feature a live remixing and reinterpretation of her music, which has never been done before.

This unprecedented concert will be honoring contributors to her music such as Richard Rudolph (her husband and co-writer) Leon Ware, Charles Stepney and the psychedelic soul sounds of his multi-racial 60’s super group The Rotary Connection (of which Minnie was also a part of), as well as highlighting her work with Stevie Wonder and other great producers/songwriters like Stewart Levine and many more.

July 12th marks the date of her transition into the infinite. Falling victim to breast cancer at the young age of 31, Minnie spent her last days on earth in Los Angeles; paying tribute to her musical greatness in the last place she called home is an honor which The Decoders do not take lightly. It will be a magical night under the stars at Grand Performances, a historic outdoor live music venue in downtown LA’s California Plaza. The event is free, all ages and open to the public.

The Ensemble:
Todd M. Simon – trumpet, flugelhorn, music director
Adam Berg – keyboards, music director

Dig Deeper:
The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble (HBE) is composed of eight brothers from the south side of Chicago. They come from an extraordinary musical family. Other sisters and brothers are professional musicians; their mothers are singers, and Philip Cohran, their esteemed father. By the time the members of the HBE were growing up, Phil’s work as a musical activist and educator led to the establishment of a space called the Sun Ark in a warehouse behind the family home above a furniture shop. At nightfall when they went to bed, the children would hear their father rehearsing with his band the Circle Of Sound. They were wakened at 6 a.m. for several hours of music practice before going to school. From an early age they were a central part of their father’s Youth Ensemble. By the end of the nineties, with everyone out of school, they brought together their musicianship, their jazz roots and their hip hop sensibility, and made a living busking on the streets of Chicago. They came up with their name after an incident on the El: playing on the platform, a man in a suit watched them for hours, missing train after train, till in the end he approached them and said, “You guys just hypnotized me.”

Kelan Phil Cohran was born in Oxford, Mississippi on May 8, 1927. He is a jazz musician, musicologist, composer, instrument designer, holistic health advocate, and community activist. He is known most for his Affro-Arts Theater, Artistic Heritage Ensemble, trumpet contributions in the Sun Ra Arkestra in Chicago (1959-1961), and as one of the cofounders of the AACM. Cohran (pronounced “co-RAHN”), was born in 1927 and grew up outside of Oxford, Mississippi in an area known to this day as “Coontown.” The family moved to St. Louis when he was about ten. In 1958 Cohran joined Sun Ra’s Arkestra in Chicago and became a lifelong devotee of the charismatic, eccentric bandleader who was either from Birmingham or Saturn, depending on who you asked. Cohran played cornet on some of the Arkestra’s greatest records, including Interstellar Low Ways and Fate in a Pleasant Mood, and became so entangled in Sun Ra’s strict regimen of practice, performance, and inculcation with esoteric ideas that he lost his wife and job. Cohran decided to stay in Chicago when the band moved to New York in 1961.

In 2008, Adrian Younge, founder of The Venice Dawn, would find himself at the center of the Black Dynamite zeitgeist. Instrumental in the film’s development, Younge not only edited the film, but also composed the original score, which was hailed as a modern blaxploitation masterpiece for authentically capturing the cinematic soul of the 1970’s, from Isaac Hayes to Curtis Mayfield. Adrian Younge solidified himself as a force to be reckoned with and soon went to work writing music for the forthcoming Black Dynamite cartoon series on Adult Swim. The new LP, titled Something About April, is a heavy, dark mix of psychedelic soul and cinematic instrumentals with hip-hop aesthetics, touching on influences from Morricone to Otis Redding. Younge is currently writing and recording material for his next project, a Delfonics album with William Hart, founding singer of the legendary soul group.

William Hart, among the first purveyors of the smooth, orchestral sound that would come to typify Philadelphia soul, The Delfonics established themselves as one of the quintessential soul groups of the late 60’s and 70’s and created some of the most notable songs of that era. Formed in the early 1960’s in Philly by brothers William “Poogie” and Wilbert Hart and schoolmate Randy Cain, the Delfonics established a reputation as a solid young vocal group and William Hart as a fine young songwriter. They hit both the Pop and Soul top five in 1968 with the Bell/William Hart composition “La La Means I Love You,” a now-classic soul ballad highlighted by Hart’s plaintive falsetto lead. More hits followed over the next few years, including the memorable “Ready Or Not Here I Come,” “You Got Yours And I’ll Get Mine” and their other top ten Pop hit, “Didn’t (I Blow Your Mind This Time),” which won the 1970 Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance.

Turning heads throughout the industry, DJ Spinna’s sonics soon infiltrated numerous genres. Tapped by everyone from George Michael to Mary J. Blige to Motown Records (for his brilliant Michael Jackson homage to “We’re Almost There”). It’s here his production presence would flourish greatly, as Spinna would go on to revive and revise Soulful marvels like Donald Byrd, Eddie Kendricks, Betty Carter, Roy Ayers and Al Jarreau. Visit New York City any given month and find a number of Spinna themed throw-downs in the city’s esteemed venues – each as memorable as the last.

As one the most important tastemakers Europe has to offer, and affiliated with labels Brownswood, Blue Note, !K7 Records and Jazzy Sport, this bearded early riser is consistently a couple steps ahead of your average early adopter. As a leading dj on Belgium’s foremost national radio station Studio Brussel he’s received compliments from Rough Trade Shops and Gilles Peterson. His passion for jazz resulted in a remix album for Blue Note which was well received by the community. Lefto is forever moving forward but always has an ear in the past. Famed for his gloriously eclectic DJ sets, he switches effortlessly between hip hop, funk, breaks, neck-snapping beats, future bass, South-American influences, bruk riddims and some wild African rhythms. He’s not only a deejay and producer but also curates his own stage at the Dour Festival and his own nights in Gent in collaboration with Democrazy.

diggin up some smooth lyrical gems.

i first heard this about 12years ago. i got it on a blank mix tape. i memorized the lyrics but lost the tape (hopefully it found it’s way into another lucky tape deck). imaginary friends by Emanon (Exile and Aloe Blacc) is a fantastic album with a sound marking a particular era of jazzy melodic hiphop. for years i had no clue who it was, i’ve ran into Exile and Aloe several times since these tracks first graced my ears and have made it a point to rant and rave about how fresh these tracks are, take a listen…

and this. !!!

One Take: From Elsie Houston to Carmen Miranda by Iara Rennó

On the Sunday before Stevie Wonder took Los Angeles on a Global Soul journey at the Hollywood Bowl. A different journey was being tracked by a young singer from Brasil in front of Graumanns Chinese Theatre. In one take here unedited, covering the song made famous by songstress Elsie Houston – Iara Renno traced the journey of another young Brasilian of Portuguese descent Carmen Miranda. Iara is a good friend of Mochilla and a third generation singer/songwriter. She looked after us when we went to premiere Timeless in Rio. She has a keen sense of history especially of the twenties and thirties. Her Operatic Ballet based on Macunaíma the famous magical, allegorical novel by ethno-musicologist Mario de Andrade is an inspiring piece. To see her work an unsuspecting crowd on Hollywood Boulevard on Sunday reminds us of the era when CGI and Darth Vader impersonators didn’t exist.

IN MEMORY OF ELSIE HOUSTON
By Iara Renno

eh eh eh
eh eh ah
where is my turtledove
who fled the cage…

Turtledove, a traditional song, was recorded in the 30’s by Elsie Houston. She was the daughter of a father from the U.S and a mother in Rio. She is Carmen Miranda’s contemporary, a friend of Pagu and Mário de Andrade. Elsie was part of this group of artists who invented indigenous Brazilian culture. Today I find myself entranced by their memory and, like them (Carmen and Elsie), somehow I ended up here in ‘Los Angeles’. My mother has the last name Miranda (no relation), and I am the turtledove, whose destiny is to sing and fly around the world.

EVENT REVIEW & SLIDESHOW : Brainfeeder LA

EVENT REVIEW & SLIDESHOW : Brainfeeder LA, Music Box June 2011 | FusicologY.COM

I’ve been to the Music Box several times but never have I witnessed such a grand set up of sound:

Perfectly vertically-aligned bass amps making the stage look like it was elegantly lowered, and of course creating that deep PureFilth sound that the Brainfeeder Crew is known for. I walked into the melodic sounds of Teebs transitioning into Samiyam‘s classic rapbeats and sneak peaks off his upcoming Sam Baker’s Album to be released on Brainfeeder.

Gaslamp Killer’s set was magnificent, weaving through classics, samples and original productions. Austin Peralta and Thundercat’s duet set was like a flight through the cosmos preparing the audience for Flying Lotus’ stellar performance.

They joined him on stage with Carla Azar from Autolux on drums, playing both unreleased and highly anticipated joints like “Do The Astro Plane”. The Brainfeeder LA show was a symphony of beats and visuals that continued throughout the night and Fusicology was there to witness it.

Caltriot: MOODYMANN in LOS ANGELES by Eric Coleman and Mike Park | MOCHILLA

Caltroit: Moodymann in L.A.

“I don’t make music for the masses to dance to, I make music for the small majority that listens.” -Kenny Dixon Jr. (aka MoodyMann)

Moodymann is one of the most inspiring House producers of all time. He is definitely a genius and one of the most outspoken voices in the normally non-confrontational world of electronic dance music. Moodymann is committed to keeping a distinctly black imprint on techno and house. While he may frustrate people with his refusal to be interviewed and insistence on reminding people of the genre’s origins, the soulfulness of his output is unquestioned. Utilizing classic soul and jazz samples, low-slung bass lines and an approach to drum programming that is diametrically opposed to the tendency to push the tempo faster and faster. Moodymann is one of the few electronic artists to create great sketches of music that translate into emotional albums that may not be easily digested but will certainly stand the test of time.

I have been a long time fan of Moody’s hybrid form of techno/house dance music. There have been many attempts to have Moodyman dj in LA but it has never quite came to pass. Mike and I were fortunate to attend two of his three highly anticipated dj performances. This video is a personal homage to one of the best soulful house producers. Moodymann is in a league of his own.

Enjoy.

Feel. George Duke 1971-1980

Ever since we started working on the Thundercat record we’ve all been listening to the living legend, George Duke so much!
Our friend B+ (Mochilla) put together a mix dedicated to his amazing catalog…

Brainfeeder

Feel. George Duke 1971-1980

Thundercat’s recent cover of For Love I Come inspired me to have a listen again to the amazing music of George Duke. When most of the records on this mix were made it was an extraordinarily creative time in LA. A family of musicians were bringing new rhythms, new instruments, new humor, new international influences to jazz. CannonBall was an important figure and his partner David Axelrod – but the new arrivals Airto Moreira and Flora Plurim were also instrumental and then George Duke from the Bay Area who had collaborated with Frank Zappa.

George Duke has been an inspiration to hip-hop for many many years… Back in 1991 an album came out called Low End Theory by A Tribe Called Quest. You may know the name for another reason but anyways on a song called The Infamous Date Rape Tribe sampled Steam Drill by Cannonball Adderley featuring George Duke and we were off to the races. Ice Cube sampled Duke for True to the Game from Death Certificate that same year. Since then many more beat heads have been attracted to Mr. Dukes amazing keyboard playing, sense of rhythm and unique lyrical stylings. Dilla has definitely listened as has Madlib, Pete Rock, Kanye, Karriem Riggins and now well Thundercat, who for all his youth has actually played with George Duke.

This mix is in tribute to George Duke as it is in celebration of Thundercat.
I think we are in a similarly creative moment now in LA as existed in the mid seventies and it seems fitting to make the link.
Good musicians will make you listen again and
ThunderCats For Love I Come surely made me do that.
Enjoy.

Music Video for “Canto de Iemanjá” by Mia Doi Todd – Kickstarter

“Canto de lemanjá” Kickstarter

About this project

PROJECT:
A dance music video for “Canto de Iemanja,” a song from Mia Doi Todd’s new album Cosmic Ocean Ship due out on May 17th, 2011 .

Iemanja is the Orisha or Goddess of the Ocean in the Yoruba, Candomble, and Santeria traditions.  She represents divine consciousness, healing unconditional love, feminine creativity and the essence of motherhood.  Kimberly Miguel-Mullen will be dancing Iemanja with Gaby Hernandez and Mia as her attendants.  We started choreographing the dance a couple months ago; now we are rehearsing at Heartbeat House in Atwater, Los Angeles.  Mia has been sewing the costumes, and Ernest Potdevin has built our Cosmic Ocean Ship.

We will be shooting the video in Baja Mexico from April 29th to May 2nd. Grace Oh and Theo Jemison will be shooting and directing the video, with drawings and aftereffects by Strangeloop.  We will make an offering on the beach of flowers, watermelon, candles, mirrors, combs, and our dance for the goddess.  We will carry her in our boat out to the Ocean and celebrate the sacred waters here on earth from which we all evolved, and the vast cosmic ocean of existence.  With the recent political and environmental upheavals we have been witnessing near and far, now is a good time for this spiritual gathering.  It’s an important moment to gather our devotion and set intentions for healing, evolution, peace and respect for the planet as a whole.

If you would like to participate in our offering, we would be very appreciative!!  There will be 15 people traveling to Baja for four days.  We could use your help with food, gas, accommodation, van and equipment rental, post-production, and flowers!  Iemanja loves white flowers!!!

Through our dance, our gathering, our offering, our prayers, we will unite together in love, peace and community.   And we will make the video to share and manifest our love.
