Miguel Atwood-Ferguson is a very unique and special force in today’s world of music. Having recorded on close to 400 albums already by the age of 34, he effortlessly bridges diverse genres and generations of musical and cultural elements into cohesive and magical presentations.
One of Miguel’s greatest achievements to date was in 2009 when he composed and conducted the historic ‘Suite for Ma Dukes’ concert in LA leading over 60 musicians in tribute to the transcendent modern Hip-Hop producer J Dilla.
Having diligently studied classically since the age of four and being exposed to cultures and art from all around the world, Miguel is now able to enjoy a very diverse career collaborating with many amazing artists. Miguel has had the great fortune to perform or record with giants such as Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones, Henry Mancini, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Wayne Shorter, Billy Higgins, Ray Brown, Brad Mehldau, Flying Lotus, Hubert Laws, Seu Jorge, Dr. Dre, Will.i.am, Madlib, and many others.
While performing on violin and viola and arranging highly
personal arrangements are Miguel’s main pursuits, he also is an educator, dj, producer, music director and composer. Miguel leads many of his own ensembles and has had incredible artists like Seu Jorge, Sly Stone, George Clinton, Shuggie Otis, Flying Lotus, Stephen ‘Thundercat’ Bruner, Chris ‘Daddy’ Dave, Zap Mama, Jose James, Bilal, Meshell Ndegeocello, Aloe Blacc, Pharoahe Monch, Quadron, Karriem Riggins, Talib Kweli and Posdnuos as his special guests.
In 2011, Miguel had the honor of providing Oprah Winfrey with a one man orchestra of himself as the music behind the main promo of her new TV Network ‘OWN’ courtesy of Miguel’s intro to his duet with Will.i.am off of the Black Eyed Peas 2010 album ‘The Beginning’. Miguel has plans to release his very first album in 2016 on the Los Angeles indie label ‘Brainfeeder.’

Go: Organic Orchestra is a 21st century vision of a kind of future orchestra: it is an original orchestral concept of world music improvisation started by Adam Rudolph in 2001. Since then he has taught and improvisationally conducted hundreds of musicians in both Europe and the United States, The music is composed as thematic material that provides a spontaneous orchestral context and inspiration for improvisational dialogue. The multicultural dynamic of Go: Organic Orchestra expresses a creative vision of a world without boundaries: of culture as the vessel for human understanding, empathy and sharing.
One of my earliest memories of Carlos Niño has to do specifically with Spaceways radio. It was about 7 years ago. I was working on an event with ArtDontSleep, running around from backstage, to stage, to ticket booth and back… regular event stuff. I held on to a question a close friend of mine had for him all night about a song he played on his show at least 5years prior. I believe Carlos hosted this event or was DJing it or maybe perhaps he connected us with a particular musician, I don’t recall the specifics but the point is, he stuck around til the end of the night allowing me to ask him about this particular song. I doubted anyone would remember with the small amount of details my friend left me with but sure enough by the time we wrapped up the night and I drove home the song I asked about was in my inbox. I was shocked and incredibly thankful. I’m blessed to say that moments like these are not rare with Carlos Niño. Always connecting folks, building, guiding, continuously offering a wealth of information and inspiration.
2015 marks 20years of Spaceways Radio, we’re celebrating with Carlos and joining him Sundays 10pm-Midnight PST on KPFK as he counts down to the final 9 shows with special guests aligned every week.

………………………………….
Carlos’ RADIO History:
“I started my first radio show, All At One Point*, on KPFK 90.7FM, Los Angeles in October 1995, after volunteering at the station as a student reporter and producer from Summer 1994*. All At One Point was focused on “Hip-Hop, Soul, Jazz, and World Rhythms.” While hosting the show on Wednesdays from 8:00pm – 10:00pm Pacific, I showcased some of my favorite contemporary artists and featured live in studio performances and interviews with a wide variety of legends, up and coming musicians, bands, and DJs.
DJ Organic, Hymnl and Jon Liu all co-hosted the show with me at different times from 1995 – 1999. In October of 1999, after a 6 month hiatus, (following the birth of my son Azul,) I returned to KPFK with a new sound and vision: Spaceways Radio. On this program I explore(d) Psychedelic, Electronic, Folk, New Age, and World Musics, and create(d) specials dedicated to individual artists and bands, phases of the Zodiac, and years past.
I was the interim Host and DJ of other music programs on KPFK at the same time that All At One Point and Spaceways aired. I’m a founding DJ of the internet radio station Dublab where many of my Spaceways Radio Archives are available. I was a monthly contributor to David Lynch Radio, and Scion Radio, and have made several special mixes for various BBC shows and channels, Red Bull Music Academy Radio, and other stations in Europe and Japan.
………………………………….
All At One Point* Named after Italo Calvino’s short story from Cosmicomics.
………………………………….
Summer 1994* Being a huge fan of KLON’s Jazz Programming, KXLU’s Mike Nardone, Rob One’s Fly ID Show on KCSN, and KCRW’s Michael Mixin Moore I was deeply inspired to get into radio. I listened to all the radio I could, and was an avid record and cassette buyer. My first attempt to get into radio was when I turned 16 in 1993, got my driver’s license and drove my Mom’s car to answer phones at KCRW. I did some introductory production assistance there too. Playlist entry, ticket give-away phone operator . . . I picked up food for the fund drive, etc.. While at the station I came across one of the coolest things ever – a folded card-stock printed guide to every public radio station in the United States, with dial numbers, call letters and cities. Being that I lived in Canoga Park, when I saw KPFK in North Hollywood on the list, I decided to check it out. I was always focused on being a Music Programmer, but got to do a few other little odd jobs in radio first . . .
………………………………….
Note: This was 100% my decision. KPFK has supported me hugely over the years! They haven’t interfered with my program at all – I’ve been free to play what I was inspired to, to interview and host whoever I wanted, and be myself! I was met with appreciation, enthusiasm and encouragement about my plans for leaving, and choosing the great DJ that will be taking over the time slot I’ve had. Please continue to support KPFK! Thank you!”
-Carlos Nino

Roy Ayers was born in Los Angeles, California and grew up in a musical family. At the age of five, Lionel Hampton gave him his first pair of mallets, which led to the vibraphone being his trademark sound for decades. The area of Los Angeles that Ayers grew up in, now known as “South Central”, but then known as “South Park”, was the epicenter of the Southern California Black Music Scene. The schools Roy attended (Wadsworth Elementary, Nevins Middle School, and Thomas Jefferson High School) were all close to the famed Central Avenue, Los Angeles’ equivalent of Harlem’s Lenox Avenue and Chicago’s State Street.
Ayers was responsible for the highly regarded soundtrack to Jack Hill’s 1973 blaxploitation film Coffy, which starred Pam Grier. He later moved from a jazz-funk sound to R&B, as seen on Mystic Voyage, which featured the songs “Evolution” and the underground disco hit “Brother Green (The Disco King)”, as well as the title track from his 1976 album Everybody Loves the Sunshine.
In 1977, Ayers produced an album by the group RAMP, Come Into Knowledge, commonly and mistakenly thought to stand for “Roy Ayers Music Project”. That Fall, he had his biggest hit with “Running Away”. In 1980, Ayers released Music Of Many Colors with the Nigerian Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti.
Since then, Roy Ayers has toured the world, many times over, released numerous records and had dozens of life changing collaborations. Roy also made a hug impact in the world of Hip-Hop and RnB. Many people have sampled him and covered him. Erykah Badu, Mary J. Blidge, Mos-Def, Digable Planets, DJ Shadow, Nas, Madlib, Ice Cube, Public Enemy, Common, The Pharcyde, Pete Rock, Jill Scott and many many more.

Pete Rock, “Soul Brother No. 1.” Rose to prominence in the early 1990s as one half of the critically acclaimed group Pete Rock & CL Smooth. After the duo went their separate ways, Rock continued with a solo career that has garnered him worldwide respect. Along with groups such as Stetsasonic, A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots and Gang Starr, Nas and Notorious B.I.G., Talib Kweli and the late J Dilla, Rock played a major role in the merging of elements from jazz into hip hop music (also known as jazz rap). He is widely recognized as one of the greatest hip hop producers of all time, and is often mentioned alongside DJ Premier and RZA as one of the mainstays of 1990s East Coast hip hop production.

Stephen Bruner is Thundercat and Thundercat is the dominant bassist rising within the ranks of R&B, rock, hip-hop, jazz, electronic, and beyond. The mystique behind the man named for his favorite cartoon seemingly hides an introspective, ambitious, and fearless young artist whose solo debut album is finally emerging in front of the vast catalog of experience he has amassed in collaboration with the likes of Erykah Badu, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Shafiq Husayn, Suicidal Tendencies, Stanley Clarke, and Flying Lotus, his closest partner and head of the Brainfeeder movement. Stephen is joined by a serious cast of jazz monsters!

J.Rocc: One of the original turntablists, J. Rocc founded the Beat Junkies in 1992 with Melo-D and Rhettmatic, but has done just as much on his own as in a group setting. He began DJing in the mid-’80s with a California group named PSK. Soon after forming, the Beat Junkies became a seminal force in the rise of instrumental hip-hop, including core member Babu plus future stars Shortkut and D-Styles.
In addition to numerous mixtapes and his own production for Stones Throw releases, J. Rocc has been the DJ for Madlib’s live shows since the early 2000’s, was the 3rd member of Jaylib (Madlib & J Dilla) during the group’s live events, and collaborated with Madlib on Beat Konducta Vol. 5-6: A Tribute to J Dilla.

Robert Glasper, Derrick Hodge & Chris “Daddy” Dave are sneaking into LA to give the west coast a dose of what NYC gets often an Experiment Experience .
I’ve been to the Music Box several times but never have I witnessed such a grand set up of sound:
Perfectly vertically-aligned bass amps making the stage look like it was elegantly lowered, and of course creating that deep PureFilth sound that the Brainfeeder Crew is known for. I walked into the melodic sounds of Teebs transitioning into Samiyam‘s classic rapbeats and sneak peaks off his upcoming Sam Baker’s Album to be released on Brainfeeder.
Gaslamp Killer’s set was magnificent, weaving through classics, samples and original productions. Austin Peralta and Thundercat’s duet set was like a flight through the cosmos preparing the audience for Flying Lotus’ stellar performance.
They joined him on stage with Carla Azar from Autolux on drums, playing both unreleased and highly anticipated joints like “Do The Astro Plane”. The Brainfeeder LA show was a symphony of beats and visuals that continued throughout the night and Fusicology was there to witness it.
music is indeed a healing power, thankful for our creative light. biggupsb+ for the heads up on this amazing album. it’s been on repeat and has inspired some true musical digging…
“…every player has an equal function, there is a way in which everything you do is structural, it’s not ever that you are over the music or on top of the music, you always are the music… it’s sort of spontaneous architecture…” ~vijay iyer
