Dig Deeper…..
Over the past 20 years an event that started off by feeding 9 people ended up growing and giving so much more, its called Gobble Gobble Give. This year on Thanksgiving Day over 24,500 men, women, and children who live on the streets were fed. 15,000 toothbrush kits, 10,000 warm hoodies and beanies. 10,000 brand new warm socks were handed out. Currently their Feed the Homeless program is in 17 cities from San Francisco to Harlem NY, from Detroit Mi to Austin Tx, from the OC to Nashville.

Skid Row Christmas is presented by Tradecraft Farms & Stick-e-vape who are celebrating their year, they decided to take their annual holiday party to another level by creating a space to gather and give back to those in need. The goal is to curate a Huge Los Angeles Christmas Celebration to raise awareness and much needed supplies for the winter. Guests are encouraged to bring an unwrapped gift to donate at the door, they will be wrapped and distributed all over the city. Gift recommendations: blankets, hoodies, packs of socks, food baskets, etc. This is a cannabis friendly event. A portion of the proceeds will go to LA’s homeless.

Ps… the cost of the VIP “Wellness” Experience is about the cost of a top shelf bouquet and comes with a bunch of highlights. You give a gift and get a gift. But a ticket: https://bit.ly/skidrowxmas

—————————————————

Miguel Atwood-Ferguson is a very unique and special force in today’s world of music. Having recorded on close to 400 albums already by the age of 34, he effortlessly bridges diverse genres and generations of musical and cultural elements into cohesive and magical presentations.

One of Miguel’s greatest achievements to date was in 2009 when he composed and conducted the historic ‘Suite for Ma Dukes’ concert in LA leading over 60 musicians in tribute to the transcendent modern Hip-Hop producer J Dilla.

Having diligently studied classically since the age of four and being exposed to cultures and art from all around the world, Miguel is now able to enjoy a very diverse career collaborating with many amazing artists. Miguel has had the great fortune to perform or record with giants such as Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones, Henry Mancini, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Wayne Shorter, Billy Higgins, Ray Brown, Brad Mehldau, Flying Lotus, Hubert Laws, Seu Jorge, Dr. Dre, Will.i.am, Madlib, and many others.

While performing on violin and viola and arranging highly
personal arrangements are Miguel’s main pursuits, he also is an educator, dj, producer, music director and composer. Miguel leads many of his own ensembles and has had incredible artists like Seu Jorge, Sly Stone, George Clinton, Shuggie Otis, Flying Lotus, Stephen ‘Thundercat’ Bruner, Chris ‘Daddy’ Dave, Zap Mama, Jose James, Bilal, Meshell Ndegeocello, Aloe Blacc, Pharoahe Monch, Quadron, Karriem Riggins, Talib Kweli and Posdnuos as his special guests.

In 2011, Miguel had the honor of providing Oprah Winfrey with a one man orchestra of himself as the music behind the main promo of her new TV Network ‘OWN’ courtesy of Miguel’s intro to his duet with Will.i.am off of the Black Eyed Peas 2010 album ‘The Beginning’. Miguel has plans to release his very first album in 2016 on the Los Angeles indie label ‘Brainfeeder.’

Go: Organic Orchestra is a 21st century vision of a kind of future orchestra: it is an original orchestral concept of world music improvisation started by Adam Rudolph in 2001. Since then he has taught and improvisationally conducted hundreds of musicians in both Europe and the United States, The music is composed as thematic material that provides a spontaneous orchestral context and inspiration for improvisational dialogue. The multicultural dynamic of Go: Organic Orchestra expresses a creative vision of a world without boundaries: of culture as the vessel for human understanding, empathy and sharing.

Celebrating 20years of Spaceways Radio with Carlos Niño!

One of my earliest memories of Carlos Niño has to do specifically with Spaceways radio. It was about 7 years ago. I was working on an event with ArtDontSleep, running around from backstage, to stage, to ticket booth and back… regular event stuff. I held on to a question a close friend of mine had for him all night about a song he played on his show at least 5years prior.  I believe Carlos hosted this event or was DJing it or maybe perhaps he connected us with a particular musician, I don’t recall the specifics but the point is, he stuck around til the end of the night allowing me to ask him about this particular song. I doubted anyone would remember with the small amount of details my friend left me with but sure enough by the time we wrapped up the night and I drove home the song I asked about was in my inbox. I was shocked and incredibly thankful. I’m blessed to say that moments like these are not rare with Carlos Niño. Always connecting folks, building, guiding, continuously offering a wealth of information and inspiration.

2015 marks 20years of Spaceways Radio, we’re celebrating with Carlos and joining him Sundays 10pm-Midnight PST on KPFK as he counts down to the final 9 shows with special guests aligned every week.

March Calendar is about 99% confirmed.

………………………………….

It’s a true honor to pass my Sundays 10:00pm – Midnight Pacific time slot on to one of the greatest DJs of all time: J.ROCC! Please tune in to KPFK on Sunday, March 29th for the premier of his new program.

………………………………….

Carlos’ RADIO History:

“I started my first radio show, All At One Point*, on KPFK 90.7FM, Los Angeles in October 1995, after volunteering at the station as a student reporter and producer from Summer 1994*. All At One Point was focused on “Hip-Hop, Soul, Jazz, and World Rhythms.” While hosting the show on Wednesdays from 8:00pm – 10:00pm Pacific, I showcased some of my favorite contemporary artists and featured live in studio performances and interviews with a wide variety of legends, up and coming musicians, bands, and DJs.

DJ Organic, Hymnl and Jon Liu all co-hosted the show with me at different
times from 1995 – 1999. In October of 1999, after a 6 month hiatus, (following
the birth of my son Azul,) I returned to KPFK with a new sound and vision:
Spaceways Radio. On this program I explore(d) Psychedelic, Electronic,
Folk, New Age, and World Musics, and create(d) specials dedicated to
individual artists and bands, phases of the Zodiac, and years past.

Spaceways Radio air times:
Sundays 10:00pm – Midnight 1999 – 2003
Fridays 8:00pm – 10:00pm 2004 – 2010
Sundays 10:00pm – Midnight 2010 – 2015

I was the interim Host and DJ of other music programs on KPFK at the same
time that All At One Point and Spaceways aired. I’m a founding DJ of the internet radio station Dublab where many of my Spaceways Radio Archives are available. I was a monthly contributor to David Lynch Radio, and Scion Radio, and have made several special mixes for various BBC shows and channels, Red Bull Music Academy Radio, and other stations in Europe and Japan.

………………………………….

All At One Point* Named after Italo Calvino’s short story from Cosmicomics.

………………………………….

Summer 1994* Being a huge fan of KLON’s Jazz Programming, KXLU’s
Mike Nardone, Rob One’s Fly ID Show on KCSN, and KCRW’s Michael
Mixin Moore I was deeply inspired to get into radio. I listened to all the radio
I could, and was an avid record and cassette buyer. My first attempt to get into
radio was when I turned 16 in 1993, got my driver’s license and drove my Mom’s car to answer phones at KCRW. I did some introductory production assistance there too. Playlist entry, ticket give-away phone operator . . . I picked up food for the fund drive, etc.. While at the station I came across one of the coolest things ever – a folded card-stock printed guide to every public radio station in the United States, with dial numbers, call letters and cities. Being that I lived in Canoga Park, when I saw KPFK in North Hollywood on the list, I decided to check it out. I was always focused on being a Music Programmer, but got to do a few other little odd jobs in radio first . . .

………………………………….

Note: This was 100% my decision. KPFK has supported me hugely over the years! They haven’t interfered with my program at all – I’ve been free to play what I was inspired to, to interview and host whoever I wanted, and be myself! I was met with appreciation, enthusiasm and encouragement about my plans for leaving, and choosing the great DJ that will be taking over the time slot I’ve had. Please continue to support KPFK! Thank you!”

-Carlos Nino

July 12th | Grand Performances | 8PM

On Saturday, July 12th, in the heart of downtown Los Angeles, The Decoders will be joined by a 20-piece ensemble that will include very special guest vocalists to celebrate the life and music of female soul icon Minnie Riperton. The event is entitled Adventures From Paradise and will feature a live remixing and reinterpretation of her music, which has never been done before.

This unprecedented concert will be honoring contributors to her music such as Richard Rudolph (her husband and co-writer) Leon Ware, Charles Stepney and the psychedelic soul sounds of his multi-racial 60’s super group The Rotary Connection (of which Minnie was also a part of), as well as highlighting her work with Stevie Wonder and other great producers/songwriters like Stewart Levine and many more.

July 12th marks the date of her transition into the infinite. Falling victim to breast cancer at the young age of 31, Minnie spent her last days on earth in Los Angeles; paying tribute to her musical greatness in the last place she called home is an honor which The Decoders do not take lightly. It will be a magical night under the stars at Grand Performances, a historic outdoor live music venue in downtown LA’s California Plaza. The event is free, all ages and open to the public.

The Ensemble:
Todd M. Simon – trumpet, flugelhorn, music director
Adam Berg – keyboards, music director
accompanied by:

In 1996, J.ROCC released a mix tape called Syndromes. We didn’t come across it until 2001, but once we did it forever changed our lives. ArtDontSleep has been profoundly influenced by The Funky President of the Beat Junkie collective known as J.ROCC. Fast forward to 2013 and we thought it would be amazing to bring this mix tape experience to life by one of our favorite arranger composers today, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson. Miguel is one of the few people on planet Earth that can take a masterpiece like syndromes, a piece that is un-conventional in nature, and elevate it to the next level. Bear witness to one of the freshest concerts happening in all of 2013. Something so unique and original that we actually don’t have a precedent to show you as an example.

J.Rocc was kind enough to edit a portion of the Syndromes mix tape and allow us to pass it on to you for free download. Please spread it around as far and wide as you would like: https://soundcloud.com/artdontsleep/j-rocc-syndromes-remix

TONY ALLEN:
Today living in Paris, Allen has long been acknowledged as Africa’s finest kit drummer and one of it’s most influential musicians, the man who with Fela Anikulapo Kuti created Afrobeat – the hard driving, James Brown funk-infused, and politically engaged style which became such a dominant force in African music and whose influence continues to spread today.

Allen was playing with the Western Toppers when he met Kuti in 1964. “Fela had been presenting a jazz records programme on NBC (Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation) on Friday nights. He decided he wanted to form his own jazz band and play the music himself in the clubs. He’d tried out several drummers, but none of them were what he was looking for. He began to think there was no-one suitable in Africa. Then someone recommended me to him. I auditioned – and he asked me if I’d learnt to play in the USA! I had the style he wanted. We played strictly jazz together for about a year, as the Fela Ransome Kuti Jazz Quartet, before we started Koola Lobitos.”

Koola Lobitos, formed in 1965, played a mixture of highlife and jazz. A few years later, at the urging of funk musicians including Bootsy Collins and other members of James Brown’s band they met on tour in the US, Kuti and Allen simplified things further. “One idea, one song” became the Afrobeat paradigm).

Koola Lobitos’ nascent Afrobeat would have been nothing without Allen’s innovative bass drum patterns, which were unlike those used by any other kit drummer working in Lagos at the time. His bass drum dealt a double whammy, b- boom, b-boom. Where other drummers would play a single beat, Allen made it a double, giving Afrobeat its trademark forward thrust. “The bass drum patterns are unique to me,” says Allen. “I’d never play one, one. Any drummer can play that straight beat. But that’s just like putting a metronome in there.”

In 1969, Koola Lobitos made an extended visit to the US, where they lived a hand to mouth existence. “The living conditions were rough,” says Allen. “We started on the east cost, where there were lots of Nigerian students, and we did well there. Then we went west, via Chicago, to San Francisco and Los Angeles.” Audiences, which were still largely composed of Nigerians, grew smaller. “Fela got fed up just playing to Nigerians. He said if we were going to play to Nigerians, we might as well do it in Nigeria where there were a lot more of them.” The Koola Lobitos album The ‘69 Los Angeles Sessions, made on the hoof towards the end of the tour, documents the emergent Afrobeat style of the band.

Kuti’s political consciousness, nurtured by his politically active parents back home – and soon to become a defining feature of Afrobeat – was sharpened in the US, where he befriended a black American woman called Sandra Isidore. A member of the Black Panthers, Isidore introduced Kuti to the ideas of such people as Malcolm X, Angela Davis, the Last Poets, Stokeley Carmichael and Eldridge Cleaver, all of whose thinking played some part in the development of Kuti‘s own political philosophy, Blackism.

Once back in Lagos, Kuti renamed the band Africa 70 (it had in the US briefly been Nigeria 70, and was later tweaked to Afrika 70). With Allen forging the music’s vibrant signature rhythms, and Kuti its incendiary lyrics, the duo had, within a few years turned Afrobeat into a style rivaling the then reigning juju and highlife in popularity.

“Fela said I sounded like four drummers,” says Allen. “I was the only one who originated the music I played.” Fela used to write out the parts for all the other musicians. If Allen sounded like four drummers, it could have been because, in his mature Afrika 70 style, he was drawing on four different styles – highlife, soul/funk, jazz and traditional African drumming. A unique and mighty sound. (In 1970 when James Brown played in Nigeria, his arranger made careful study of Fela’s band and Allen’s drumming in particular, as did Ginger Baker, another disciple).

In 1975, Allen recorded his debut album, ‘Jealousy’, the first of three made with Afrika 70 and produced by Kuti. ‘Progress’ followed in 1976, ‘No Accommodation For Lagos’ in 1978. But by 1978 he was ready for a change of scene, and a year later he parted company with Kuti. The touring entourage had grown to outlandish proportions and there was talk of him not getting due respect or recompense for the contribution he had made to the creation of Afrobeat and the success of Afrika 70. “It’s not a big story,” says Allen today. “I was tired, I’d just had enough.” His final studio collaboration with Kuti was on an album made with American vibraphonist Roy Ayers, ‘Africa Centre Of The World’ (released in 1981). In 1979 he formed his own band, Tony Allen and the Afro Messengers, and recorded his first album away from Kuti, ‘No Discrimination’.

“Music is my mission,” says Allen. “I never get satisfied and I’m still learning from others. The musical world is very spiritual, and I don’t think there’s an end to it. As musicians, it’s our mission to keep going.”

That 70s Soul! 12/16/12 in Los Angeles ~

http://www.artdontsleep.com

Soul music is timeless, but if there was one decade when it defined the times that would be the seventies. The style was born in the mid-sixties at a time when its creators were struggling to establish their place in American society. Sam Cooke, Lou Rawls, Solomon Burke, Curtis, Otis, Smokey, Marvin, James, Sly and Bobby Womack among countless others, sketched out a blueprint for a new, modern Black music that would soon sweep the nation from Harlem’s 125th street to rural Virginia’s Tobacco Road and as far as Watt’s 103rd street. Ironically, it took some Brits and Bob Dylan’s endorsement to hip whitestream America to what they were missing out on in their own blackyard. As the sixties turned into the seventies, and all but the Panthers deferred their dreams of racial revolution, soul music matured and flourished as if all the hopes, dreams, anger and disappointment of a generation of young Blacks found expression in the music of Stevie, Curtis, Marvin and Minnie.

We almost lost Detroit, but from this and many other cities’ ashes emerged a beautiful and bold music – a more personal, and therefore universal, expression – that evolved into one of the most dominant culture expressions of the decade. By the dawn of the seventies, soul music was mainstreaming with the crossover success of artists like Stevie Wonder, Bill Withers, Marvin Gaye, Isaac Hayes, Minnie Riperton, Al Green and Michael Jackson. Just about everyone was getting in on the new trend of socially conscious lyrics, fatback drums and stop-on-a-dime horn sections. The popular and critical response to this music blew open the doors for a whole family of styles. Soul music was appropriated and incorporated into just about every other genre imaginable: soul-jazz, soul-rock, psychedelic soul, latin soul, and blue-eyed soul are just a few of the more popular hybrids.

And then there’s Funk. Like Metal is to Rock ‘n Roll, Funk is an extreme manifestation of Soul music that emerged in the late sixties and early seventies from the bold rhythmic experiments of Soul music’s pioneers like James, Sly, Curtis & Stevie. Soul music was the foundation and Funk was the attitude, the secret spice to get the people moving and it was applied liberally to songs by new and established artists alike. Some musicians, like Parliament-Funkadelic founder George Clinton, started their careers in the sixties singing Soul, but after Sly and James took their music to faster, funkier and blacker places, they followed headlong into uncharted funkmospheres, further expanding the sonic, social and sexual boundaries of Soul music. Herbie and his Headhunters, Donald Byrd, Roy Ayers to name but a few respected jazz musicians were helpless against this powerful new sound, giving us jazz-funk.

Sadly, America’s soul obsession wouldn’t last forever. Like a salesperson that didn’t understand its product or consumer, the music industry forced the soul into extinction by forcing it into platform boogie shoes and a rigid 4-4 dance beat. Some survived, but most artists’ careers tanked or they were forced to radically change their game. Forty years later, soul music is more popular than it’s been for decades with new talent and audiences gravitating to its sincere sentiment, heartfelt harmonies, and bad-ass beats.

ArtDontSleep will bring over two dozen timeless tunes and hi-fi highlights from 1970-1979 to life for one night only with That 70s Soul featuring Seu Jorge, Zap Mama, Alice Russell, Spacek, Coco O. (Quadron) and others. An all-star cast of musicians, including legends Ndugu Chancler and Derf Reklaw along with future legend Kamasi Washington, lead by multi-instrumentalist and arranger/composer Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, will breathe new life into these seventies soul masterpieces. These are many of the same creative and fearless musicians and promoters that brought you the recent East Side Story Show as well as the 2009 Timeless series featuring the music of J. Dilla, Mulatu Astake and Arthur Verocai.

On this special night some of the under-sung musical heroes that are still alive and with us today, like Leon Ware, James Gadson and others be honored through their music and presence.

Leon Ware is best known for the songs he’s written, Marvin Gaye’s “I Want You”, Quincy Jones or Average White Band’s “If I Ever Lose This Heaven” or Minnie Riperton’s “Inside My Love”, though he has no fewer than ten albums recorded under his own name for Motown, Elektra and most recently for the revived Stax record label. His sophisticated and sensual style of soul helped to define the influential quiet storm style.

James Gadson is a living legend behind a drum kit. He’s played behind everyone from Bill Withers and Charles Wright and the 103rd Street Band to Justin Timberlake and Norah Jones, with Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin and countless others along the way. Far from a one-trick pony, he’s also written, produced and sang on hundreds of records from the Doo-Wop era to the present day.
