One Take: From Elsie Houston to Carmen Miranda by Iara Rennó

On the Sunday before Stevie Wonder took Los Angeles on a Global Soul journey at the Hollywood Bowl. A different journey was being tracked by a young singer from Brasil in front of Graumanns Chinese Theatre. In one take here unedited, covering the song made famous by songstress Elsie Houston – Iara Renno traced the journey of another young Brasilian of Portuguese descent Carmen Miranda. Iara is a good friend of Mochilla and a third generation singer/songwriter. She looked after us when we went to premiere Timeless in Rio. She has a keen sense of history especially of the twenties and thirties. Her Operatic Ballet based on Macunaíma the famous magical, allegorical novel by ethno-musicologist Mario de Andrade is an inspiring piece. To see her work an unsuspecting crowd on Hollywood Boulevard on Sunday reminds us of the era when CGI and Darth Vader impersonators didn’t exist.

B+

IN MEMORY OF ELSIE HOUSTON
By Iara Renno

eh eh eh
eh eh ah
where is my turtledove
who fled the cage…

Turtledove, a traditional song, was recorded in the 30’s by Elsie Houston. She was the daughter of a father from the U.S and a mother in Rio. She is Carmen Miranda’s contemporary, a friend of Pagu and Mário de Andrade. Elsie was part of this group of artists who invented indigenous Brazilian culture. Today I find myself entranced by their memory and, like them (Carmen and Elsie), somehow I ended up here in ‘Los Angeles’. My mother has the last name Miranda (no relation), and I am the turtledove, whose destiny is to sing and fly around the world.

Caltriot: MOODYMANN in LOS ANGELES by Eric Coleman and Mike Park | MOCHILLA

Caltroit: Moodymann in L.A.

“I don’t make music for the masses to dance to, I make music for the small majority that listens.” -Kenny Dixon Jr. (aka MoodyMann)

Moodymann is one of the most inspiring House producers of all time. He is definitely a genius and one of the most outspoken voices in the normally non-confrontational world of electronic dance music. Moodymann is committed to keeping a distinctly black imprint on techno and house. While he may frustrate people with his refusal to be interviewed and insistence on reminding people of the genre’s origins, the soulfulness of his output is unquestioned. Utilizing classic soul and jazz samples, low-slung bass lines and an approach to drum programming that is diametrically opposed to the tendency to push the tempo faster and faster. Moodymann is one of the few electronic artists to create great sketches of music that translate into emotional albums that may not be easily digested but will certainly stand the test of time.

I have been a long time fan of Moody’s hybrid form of techno/house dance music. There have been many attempts to have Moodyman dj in LA but it has never quite came to pass. Mike and I were fortunate to attend two of his three highly anticipated dj performances. This video is a personal homage to one of the best soulful house producers. Moodymann is in a league of his own.

Enjoy.

Feel. George Duke 1971-1980

Ever since we started working on the Thundercat record we’ve all been listening to the living legend, George Duke so much!
Our friend B+ (Mochilla) put together a mix dedicated to his amazing catalog…

Brainfeeder

Feel. George Duke 1971-1980

Thundercat’s recent cover of For Love I Come inspired me to have a listen again to the amazing music of George Duke. When most of the records on this mix were made it was an extraordinarily creative time in LA. A family of musicians were bringing new rhythms, new instruments, new humor, new international influences to jazz. CannonBall was an important figure and his partner David Axelrod – but the new arrivals Airto Moreira and Flora Plurim were also instrumental and then George Duke from the Bay Area who had collaborated with Frank Zappa.

George Duke has been an inspiration to hip-hop for many many years… Back in 1991 an album came out called Low End Theory by A Tribe Called Quest. You may know the name for another reason but anyways on a song called The Infamous Date Rape Tribe sampled Steam Drill by Cannonball Adderley featuring George Duke and we were off to the races. Ice Cube sampled Duke for True to the Game from Death Certificate that same year. Since then many more beat heads have been attracted to Mr. Dukes amazing keyboard playing, sense of rhythm and unique lyrical stylings. Dilla has definitely listened as has Madlib, Pete Rock, Kanye, Karriem Riggins and now well Thundercat, who for all his youth has actually played with George Duke.

This mix is in tribute to George Duke as it is in celebration of Thundercat.
I think we are in a similarly creative moment now in LA as existed in the mid seventies and it seems fitting to make the link.
Good musicians will make you listen again and
ThunderCats For Love I Come surely made me do that.
Enjoy.

Braza! feat. B+ and Eric Coleman Party June 3, 2011 @ SOM SF

brazasf.com

Once a month, Braza! is taking a faithful crowd on a musical trip around Brazil to explore the rhythms and sounds of Samba, Funk, Batucada, MPB, Broken Beat, Tropicália, Hip Hop, Forró, House, Boogie, Soul, Drum ‘n’ Bass, Disco, Jazz, Bossa Nova, and so much more this great country has to offer.

Whether it’s Kento playing his recent finds from a Brazilian family visit or Vanka and Elan playing the contemporary rhythms of Baile Funk and Brazilian house you’re guaranteed to see groups of Brazilian transplants moving and socializing. But what gives Braza its lively reputation and charm is the addition of live Brazilian percussion players, iconic Brazilian images being projected onto SOM’s wall, and even food carts serving up native delights.. The party achieves the difficult task of not only bringing the sights, sounds, and tastes of Brazil but most importantly a spirit that usually can only be found 6,476 miles away.

POSTPONED “Creating Memory is Our Weapon” Photo Exhibition

Friends,

It is with great sadness that we announce the postponement of the “Creating Memory is our Weapon” Show at the Urban Sanctuary Gallery in Boyle Heights. It had always been a dream of ours to have the show in Boyle Heights. Ten years ago we had shown the photographs at the great Frank Sosa’s space on Silverlake Blvd and it was a great honor to be able to bring the photos East, but sadly the local political terrain proved …too complicated for it to happen at this time. Two days ago it was brought to our attention that several local “artivists” had started a campaign online to boycott the show. Apparently there has been some conflict locally with the management of Urban Sanctuary. We have spent the past 48 hours trying to negotiate a settlement that would allow the show to continue – but in the end with threats looming and an extraordinary amount of anger being expressed we decided to postpone the show until we are able to honor the memory of the Marcha in a more clear environment. It was never our intention to inflame local anger, to incite a boycott or indeed to put our constituency on any side of a local conflict.

Zapatismo has plenty to do with local conflicts but not in this way.

Please accept our humblest apologies if this in any way affects your plans for tonight. Let me also take this opportunity to thank Azul 213 and our own Rocio Contreras for the huge amount of work they put into this show.

We will all reap the rewards of this show in a less contentious space at a later date.

March 11th, 2011

“Our most ancient ones taught us that the celebration of memory is also a celebration of tomorrow. They told us that memory is not turning one’s head and heart towards the past. It is not a sterile remembrance which speaks laughter or tears. Memory, they told us, is one of the seven guides which the human heart needs in order to make its journey. The other six are truth, pride, consistency, honesty, respect for oneself and for the other, and love.”
-Subcommandante Marcos, March 24, 2001

The Zapatistas March on Mexico City

– On Feb. 25 2001, the leaders of the insurgent Indian people of Chiapas launched a two-week mass march on Mexico City to remobilize and extend mass support for the demands of those sections of the Mexican population who have suffered most from the world capitalist offensive-the indigenous peoples.

Twenty three commandantes and one sub-commandante left the autonomous mountains of South East Mexico to travel to the Federal District of Mexico City with three demands: 1. To seek approval of the Indigenous Bill of Rights. 2. To seek the withdrawal of seven military bases from indigenous land and 3. To seek the release of all remaining EZLN prisoners.

On the eleventh of March they walked onto a platform in the Zocalo (Mexico City’s picturesque town square) to see one million Mexicans cheer them and offer support and solidarity. Having secured the support of the National Indigenous Council, the Zapatistas took the city with delegates from forty four of Mexico’s fifty seven indigenous nations.

TIMELESS SCREENS IN BRASIL!

VTech and Mochilla have collaborated on many groundbreaking musical events, but the pinnacle was in 2009 with the amazing Timeless Series that was brought to Los Angeles. It truly was the beginning. Where musical borders were no longer seen as obstacles, and where composer arrangers who were once overlooked were wholeheartedly embraced. From the series, celebrated Brasilian composer/arranger was one of three, and now, we find the Timeless series traveling to Arthur’s home country in fitting fashion.

J.Rocc, Coleman and B+ will be in Sao Paulo from February 9-11th screening at the Espaco Unibanco de Cinema and then on the 16-18th at the Unibanco Arteplex Botafogo in Rio de Janeiro. Each film will be screened individually and also J.Rocc will have a chance to do his special Timeless Serato Mega-Mix. There will be Q&As each night with special friends dropping by to contribute.

Share the info, share the music, share the experience. And as always, “Turn it Up!!”

VTech Presents: A Decade of Mochilla (Part One)
***Download: A Decade of Mochilla (Part One)

VTech is proud to present, A Decade of Mochilla, an epic mixtape, spanning Mochilla’s 10 Years Mixed into one mixtape and shared with you in two parts. This is Part One…

Mochilla is really more than ten years old. It was 1998 when Coleman and I explained to our Mexican producer on the set of the Control Machete video for Ileso that we would only shoot with the equipment that fit in our backpack. It was a Jansport (for clarity!). He replied… “Oh ok, you guys are the Mochila guys, Mochileros”. Of course we loved the word mochilla (the Spanish for backpack) but apparently didn’t know how to spell it thus the two Ls!

In 2001 we released our first project commercially under that name. Keepintime was a photo-essay that under the tutelage of Adam Glickman at Tokion became a short film. He initially thought of it as a piece to put on that new thing – the internet. But when it ended up being 12 minutes long we decided it was too long so we made a VHS to sell – we pressed up a thousand and they flew out the door.

Keepintime: Talking Drums and Whispering Vinyl became a Film Festival favorite and then the calls started. In the ten years since then Mochilla has grown. We have an office now and a micro staff of dedicated, talented people. We have travelled the world, made films about all kinds of music, crossed all kinds of boundaries, worked with people from 5 to 95 years of age and we are having a lot of fun the process. Along the way we have made an archive of photos, videos and audio. It is filled with glorious performances, tough breaks, ambitious harmonies and a lot of soul.

Early in 2011 we will be releasing a two CD Mix of these performances – one live and one live in studio.

As a seasonal gift to our friends at VTech we have decided to sneak you this first 20 minutes of the first volume. This is truly only a sneak peak in to the vast musical vaults of Mochilla. Coleman has sat thru many hours of music, digging in and around multi-tracks of kicks, snares and scratches. It is almost unfair to try to encapsulate all of this wonderful music into 2 CDs, but he did. Next week we will have another 20 minutes from the second CD, the studio sessions.

There’s a lot of memories here. A lot of magic.

Download, enjoy and you know – turn it up!

VTech Presents: Mochilla: 10 Year Anniversary Part 2 (The Studio Sessions)
***Download: Mochilla: 10 Year Anniversary Part 2 (The Studio Sessions)

The response to the first part of this mix has been incredible. Thank you for all the support and retweeting, reposting. Mochilla loves the love. Part two here today for download is stepping the game up and to quote Coleman “I wanted this mix to slap everyone in the face and get them to pay attention.” It is purely rhetorical of course, our version of a slap in the face is the caress of bossa nova, the thump of cumbia or the heart stopping wind sucking gaps of great syncopation. This mix has all of that.

Remember of course these are 20 minute teasers for the full mixes coming in 2011.

Just a quick note on the photo that we used on the cover – I snapped this one at the great “La Marcha” way back in 2001. It was taken in the Zocalo in Mexico City and Maldita Vecindad were performing in solidarity with the EZLN. The kid on his friends shoulders with the El Che shirt embodies all that we wanted Mochilla to be way back in 01 – engaged, excited, energetic and happy. Our brother and design guru Keith Tamashiro flipped it into our first logo and Stephen Serato has reflipped it into our 10 year mix cover.

This will warm your ears, brighten your heart and remind you of the strength of good music, download, hit play and you know – turn it up…

Thanks for all your support and happy holidays,

Sounds of Al-Mashriq: The Land Where the Sun Rises

Mochilla Brings You An Exclusive Music Mix From The East

https://i0.wp.com/i527.photobucket.com/albums/cc359/WeFlyInk/ME-MIX-FINAL-With-SHOUTS-9_27_10-1.jpg

Sounds of Al-Mashriq: The Land Where the Sun Rises

Mochilla has brought you some beautiful mixes over the past twelve months: Hear the World, Addis to Axum, and the Verocai retrospective, Arranjos e Compisicoes. We value the idea of new old music, treasures that most likely haven’t found their way to your ears yet, and today’s mix is no different.

This past summer, Coleman and myself, along with Jay Electronica and his DJ, TJ the King, Ommar Offendum, and Will Quantic had the chance to go to the Middle East and play. We even made it to Egypt and linked with Kutmah there, but that’s a whole other story… This mix represents some of what we learned. It’s a group effort, but Coleman made the whole thing seem magically coherent…

Please click HERE, on album images or follow link below to download this mix and read the liner notes.

Exclusive Mochilla Petronio Alvarez Audio
Slideshow by B+ and Quantic

[Click HERE or on Image to view Slideshow]

The Petronio Alvarez Festival is a 5 day music event and competition held annually in Cali, Colombia. By a process of application and selection over 90 groups are invited each year to compete for the winning title. Across several evenings, bands perform in different musical categories as five judges mark them on appearance, composition, delivery and sound. The diversity is astounding, but all music presented is rooted in the traditions of the Pacific: marimba lead currulao from the south of the coast, home made violins from cauca and cutting dual-clarinet chiramia music from the choco region. As well as strictly folkloric groups, the festival also plays host to more urban interpretations of the Pacific sound, fusing tradition with salsa, reggaeton and rap. The Petronio experience is band focused, but the crowd give so much to the event, a great sense of unity and pride is shared by all who attend. A songline sung on stage soon becomes a thousand strong sing-along echoing around the shaky concrete frame of the bull ring it is held in.

People arrive ready to represent their origins in the Pacific and both celebrate and illuminate African heritage in Colombia. The festival also serves as a tremendous opportunity to see groups from rural regions who often travel several days by water and road to get there. It would be near impossible to see such a cross section of groups at any time of the year without traveling for several months by boat throughout the Pacific rivers and jungles, a part of Colombia increasingly known for its guerilla and paramilitary presence.

The Petronio Alvarez festival, relatively speaking, is still in its infancy. But like so many events of its kind, commerciality and business interests can so quickly change the aesthetics beyond recognition. For the meantime, Petronio remains an event for the people, people who for a long time have been excluded or isolated from mainstream Colombian identity. It’s not the most organized event, nor the biggest, but it’s certainly one of the most vibrant live music experiences you’re ever likely to experience.

The Narcicyst feat Shadia Mansour – “Hamdulillah” (Official Video)

Directed and Edited by Ridwan Adhami  | Written by Yassin Alsalman and Shadia Mansour | Original Track produced by SandhiLL | Piano by Stefan Christoff | Additional production and arrangement by Doctor Dinar and The Narcicyst

To say ‘Hamdulillah’ is to be grateful for what one has.

The images of the past decades have cast a veil on our identity as a people. We, as international brothers and sisters, are now witness to injustice in real time. We watch our Wars in HD. Injustice is played in real time.

It is time for us to claim our faces back.

This video is a global collaborative effort by 10 photographers- from London to Lebanon, Cairo To Canada, Abu Dhabi to America- to create a portrait of the New Global Citizens. They are DJs, MCs, poets, architects, teachers, doctors, parents and children. Most of all they are people.

Thank you to everyone that was involved. We are blessed to have each other.

Dwele sings Angel w/Suite for Ma Dukes 40 piece orchestra!

Feb 10th is the fourth anniversary of Dilla’s untimely passing. People are celebrating his life all month long. At Mochilla, we have spent the past year working on A Suite for Ma Dukes. Until now we have held our cards close to our chest releasing videos and entirely instrumental pieces. But today in homage to the man responsible for all this we are releasing, just to you, the first vocal performance from SFMD.

Dwele sang Angel that night without rehearsal. It is a classic. Miguel’s arrangement is super heavy and Bob Power made it magic.
