Celebrating 20years of Spaceways Radio with Carlos Niño!

One of my earliest memories of Carlos Niño has to do specifically with Spaceways radio. It was about 7 years ago. I was working on an event with ArtDontSleep, running around from backstage, to stage, to ticket booth and back… regular event stuff. I held on to a question a close friend of mine had for him all night about a song he played on his show at least 5years prior.  I believe Carlos hosted this event or was DJing it or maybe perhaps he connected us with a particular musician, I don’t recall the specifics but the point is, he stuck around til the end of the night allowing me to ask him about this particular song. I doubted anyone would remember with the small amount of details my friend left me with but sure enough by the time we wrapped up the night and I drove home the song I asked about was in my inbox. I was shocked and incredibly thankful. I’m blessed to say that moments like these are not rare with Carlos Niño. Always connecting folks, building, guiding, continuously offering a wealth of information and inspiration.

March Calendar is about 99% confirmed.

………………………………….

It’s a true honor to pass my Sundays 10:00pm – Midnight Pacific time slot on to one of the greatest DJs of all time: J.ROCC! Please tune in to KPFK on Sunday, March 29th for the premier of his new program.

………………………………….

Carlos’ RADIO History:

“I started my first radio show, All At One Point*, on KPFK 90.7FM, Los Angeles in October 1995, after volunteering at the station as a student reporter and producer from Summer 1994*. All At One Point was focused on “Hip-Hop, Soul, Jazz, and World Rhythms.” While hosting the show on Wednesdays from 8:00pm – 10:00pm Pacific, I showcased some of my favorite contemporary artists and featured live in studio performances and interviews with a wide variety of legends, up and coming musicians, bands, and DJs.

DJ Organic, Hymnl and Jon Liu all co-hosted the show with me at different
times from 1995 – 1999. In October of 1999, after a 6 month hiatus, (following
the birth of my son Azul,) I returned to KPFK with a new sound and vision:
Spaceways Radio. On this program I explore(d) Psychedelic, Electronic,
Folk, New Age, and World Musics, and create(d) specials dedicated to
individual artists and bands, phases of the Zodiac, and years past.

Spaceways Radio air times:
Sundays 10:00pm – Midnight 1999 – 2003
Fridays 8:00pm – 10:00pm 2004 – 2010
Sundays 10:00pm – Midnight 2010 – 2015

I was the interim Host and DJ of other music programs on KPFK at the same
time that All At One Point and Spaceways aired. I’m a founding DJ of the internet radio station Dublab where many of my Spaceways Radio Archives are available. I was a monthly contributor to David Lynch Radio, and Scion Radio, and have made several special mixes for various BBC shows and channels, Red Bull Music Academy Radio, and other stations in Europe and Japan.

………………………………….

All At One Point* Named after Italo Calvino’s short story from Cosmicomics.

………………………………….

Summer 1994* Being a huge fan of KLON’s Jazz Programming, KXLU’s
Mike Nardone, Rob One’s Fly ID Show on KCSN, and KCRW’s Michael
Mixin Moore I was deeply inspired to get into radio. I listened to all the radio
I could, and was an avid record and cassette buyer. My first attempt to get into
radio was when I turned 16 in 1993, got my driver’s license and drove my Mom’s car to answer phones at KCRW. I did some introductory production assistance there too. Playlist entry, ticket give-away phone operator . . . I picked up food for the fund drive, etc.. While at the station I came across one of the coolest things ever – a folded card-stock printed guide to every public radio station in the United States, with dial numbers, call letters and cities. Being that I lived in Canoga Park, when I saw KPFK in North Hollywood on the list, I decided to check it out. I was always focused on being a Music Programmer, but got to do a few other little odd jobs in radio first . . .

………………………………….

Note: This was 100% my decision. KPFK has supported me hugely over the years! They haven’t interfered with my program at all – I’ve been free to play what I was inspired to, to interview and host whoever I wanted, and be myself! I was met with appreciation, enthusiasm and encouragement about my plans for leaving, and choosing the great DJ that will be taking over the time slot I’ve had. Please continue to support KPFK! Thank you!”

give thanks. everyday.

each year i make it a point to discuss, educate and bring light to the reality of what Americans call “Thanksgiving” ~ in actuality it is a Day of Mourning. A day of loss, on so many levels. This year I’ll include the light but yet harsh reality interpreted by Wednesday along with a letter that i think everyone should read.
give thanks. everyday.

The following message is from Mashpee Wampanoag Chairman Cedric Cromwell:

“Dear Tribal Community,
Warm greetings to you and your family on this Thanksgiving Day 2012. The Thanksgiving holiday is a complicated day for our people. We are forever intertwined with the American Thanksgiving myth, however inaccurate it may be. Some of our people choose to observe this day as a Day of Mourning. Some choose to celebrate in a thoroughly American way. Many choose a different path, spending the day with family and friends, but acknowledging our unique history and connection to this day.

Thanksgiving is not something we as Wampanoag people do on a single day, it is a way of life. Every day we give thanks to the Creator, thanks to our ancestors, and thanks to the natural world around us. Today is no different. We give thanks. We strive every day to continue in the ways of our ancestors: welcoming people and treating them with dignity and respect. Helping each other in any way we can. Creating a better future for seven generations to come.

Today and every day, please join me in giving thanks to our ancestors, who, despite attempts to eliminate their presence on this earth, persevered and made it possible for us to be here today. Thanks to our Tribal family, our Elders for their wisdom and guidance; to our Youth and their hard work to make their way in this modern world by learning the ways of their ancestors while also getting the education they need to provide a better future for themselves and their Tribal family; and to all Tribal citizens who work hard every day to provide services to those in need, preserve our history and culture, and lift our whole Tribal nation up with positivity and respect.

No matter how you choose to observe this day, please know this: I am thankful for you. I hope that you are surrounded by your loved ones and have a blessed day.

Kutaputunumuw;

Cedric Cromwell

thanks fmwj!

i’d like to help you in your struggles to be free…

The Truth
Ever since I was a youth,
I have always been searching for the truth,
But having been told so many lies,
Life like good music never dies,
So the question is posed,
Only who in Heaven knows,
why is a man respected when he is dead ?
Should’nt that respect be paid to the living INSTEAD.

Alive a man is sufferer of no mean order,
But dead he has an estate to the value of a Million and over,
I must die one day,
You’ll all hear people say,
Yet praying for Salvation,
In corrupted meditation,
Storing up wealth, ignoring their health,
But, a tree is known by its fruits,
There is no life in lies,
It’s all in the truth.

Roy Ayers was born in Los Angeles, California and grew up in a musical family. At the age of five, Lionel Hampton gave him his first pair of mallets, which led to the vibraphone being his trademark sound for decades. The area of Los Angeles that Ayers grew up in, now known as “South Central”, but then known as “South Park”, was the epicenter of the Southern California Black Music Scene. The schools Roy attended (Wadsworth Elementary, Nevins Middle School, and Thomas Jefferson High School) were all close to the famed Central Avenue, Los Angeles’ equivalent of Harlem’s Lenox Avenue and Chicago’s State Street.

Ayers was responsible for the highly regarded soundtrack to Jack Hill’s 1973 blaxploitation film Coffy, which starred Pam Grier. He later moved from a jazz-funk sound to R&B, as seen on Mystic Voyage, which featured the songs “Evolution” and the underground disco hit “Brother Green (The Disco King)”, as well as the title track from his 1976 album Everybody Loves the Sunshine.

In 1977, Ayers produced an album by the group RAMP, Come Into Knowledge, commonly and mistakenly thought to stand for “Roy Ayers Music Project”. That Fall, he had his biggest hit with “Running Away”. In 1980, Ayers released Music Of Many Colors with the Nigerian Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti.

Since then, Roy Ayers has toured the world, many times over, released numerous records and had dozens of life changing collaborations. Roy also made a hug impact in the world of Hip-Hop and RnB. Many people have sampled him and covered him. Erykah Badu, Mary J. Blidge, Mos-Def, Digable Planets, DJ Shadow, Nas, Madlib, Ice Cube, Public Enemy, Common, The Pharcyde, Pete Rock, Jill Scott and many many more.

———————–

Pete Rock, “Soul Brother No. 1.” Rose to prominence in the early 1990s as one half of the critically acclaimed group Pete Rock & CL Smooth. After the duo went their separate ways, Rock continued with a solo career that has garnered him worldwide respect. Along with groups such as Stetsasonic, A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots and Gang Starr, Nas and Notorious B.I.G., Talib Kweli and the late J Dilla, Rock played a major role in the merging of elements from jazz into hip hop music (also known as jazz rap). He is widely recognized as one of the greatest hip hop producers of all time, and is often mentioned alongside DJ Premier and RZA as one of the mainstays of 1990s East Coast hip hop production.

———————–

Stephen Bruner is Thundercat and Thundercat is the dominant bassist rising within the ranks of R&B, rock, hip-hop, jazz, electronic, and beyond. The mystique behind the man named for his favorite cartoon seemingly hides an introspective, ambitious, and fearless young artist whose solo debut album is finally emerging in front of the vast catalog of experience he has amassed in collaboration with the likes of Erykah Badu, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Shafiq Husayn, Suicidal Tendencies, Stanley Clarke, and Flying Lotus, his closest partner and head of the Brainfeeder movement. Stephen is joined by a serious cast of jazz monsters!

———————–

J.Rocc: One of the original turntablists, J. Rocc founded the Beat Junkies in 1992 with Melo-D and Rhettmatic, but has done just as much on his own as in a group setting. He began DJing in the mid-’80s with a California group named PSK. Soon after forming, the Beat Junkies became a seminal force in the rise of instrumental hip-hop, including core member Babu plus future stars Shortkut and D-Styles.

In addition to numerous mixtapes and his own production for Stones Throw releases, J. Rocc has been the DJ for Madlib’s live shows since the early 2000’s, was the 3rd member of Jaylib (Madlib & J Dilla) during the group’s live events, and collaborated with Madlib on Beat Konducta Vol. 5-6: A Tribute to J Dilla.

Caltriot: MOODYMANN in LOS ANGELES by Eric Coleman and Mike Park | MOCHILLA

Caltroit: Moodymann in L.A.

“I don’t make music for the masses to dance to, I make music for the small majority that listens.” -Kenny Dixon Jr. (aka MoodyMann)

Moodymann is one of the most inspiring House producers of all time. He is definitely a genius and one of the most outspoken voices in the normally non-confrontational world of electronic dance music. Moodymann is committed to keeping a distinctly black imprint on techno and house. While he may frustrate people with his refusal to be interviewed and insistence on reminding people of the genre’s origins, the soulfulness of his output is unquestioned. Utilizing classic soul and jazz samples, low-slung bass lines and an approach to drum programming that is diametrically opposed to the tendency to push the tempo faster and faster. Moodymann is one of the few electronic artists to create great sketches of music that translate into emotional albums that may not be easily digested but will certainly stand the test of time.

I have been a long time fan of Moody’s hybrid form of techno/house dance music. There have been many attempts to have Moodyman dj in LA but it has never quite came to pass. Mike and I were fortunate to attend two of his three highly anticipated dj performances. This video is a personal homage to one of the best soulful house producers. Moodymann is in a league of his own.

Enjoy.

POSTPONED “Creating Memory is Our Weapon” Photo Exhibition

Friends,

It is with great sadness that we announce the postponement of the “Creating Memory is our Weapon” Show at the Urban Sanctuary Gallery in Boyle Heights. It had always been a dream of ours to have the show in Boyle Heights. Ten years ago we had shown the photographs at the great Frank Sosa’s space on Silverlake Blvd and it was a great honor to be able to bring the photos East, but sadly the local political terrain proved …too complicated for it to happen at this time. Two days ago it was brought to our attention that several local “artivists” had started a campaign online to boycott the show. Apparently there has been some conflict locally with the management of Urban Sanctuary. We have spent the past 48 hours trying to negotiate a settlement that would allow the show to continue – but in the end with threats looming and an extraordinary amount of anger being expressed we decided to postpone the show until we are able to honor the memory of the Marcha in a more clear environment. It was never our intention to inflame local anger, to incite a boycott or indeed to put our constituency on any side of a local conflict.

Zapatismo has plenty to do with local conflicts but not in this way.

Please accept our humblest apologies if this in any way affects your plans for tonight. Let me also take this opportunity to thank Azul 213 and our own Rocio Contreras for the huge amount of work they put into this show.

We will all reap the rewards of this show in a less contentious space at a later date.

“Our most ancient ones taught us that the celebration of memory is also a celebration of tomorrow. They told us that memory is not turning one’s head and heart towards the past. It is not a sterile remembrance which speaks laughter or tears. Memory, they told us, is one of the seven guides which the human heart needs in order to make its journey. The other six are truth, pride, consistency, honesty, respect for oneself and for the other, and love.”
-Subcommandante Marcos, March 24, 2001

The Zapatistas March on Mexico City

– On Feb. 25 2001, the leaders of the insurgent Indian people of Chiapas launched a two-week mass march on Mexico City to remobilize and extend mass support for the demands of those sections of the Mexican population who have suffered most from the world capitalist offensive-the indigenous peoples.

Twenty three commandantes and one sub-commandante left the autonomous mountains of South East Mexico to travel to the Federal District of Mexico City with three demands: 1. To seek approval of the Indigenous Bill of Rights. 2. To seek the withdrawal of seven military bases from indigenous land and 3. To seek the release of all remaining EZLN prisoners.

On the eleventh of March they walked onto a platform in the Zocalo (Mexico City’s picturesque town square) to see one million Mexicans cheer them and offer support and solidarity. Having secured the support of the National Indigenous Council, the Zapatistas took the city with delegates from forty four of Mexico’s fifty seven indigenous nations.

Black August : Hip Hop Project

+powerful. educational. inspirational documentary film “Black August Hip Hop Project” directed by Dream Hampton | Los Angeles screenings: Sat, Feb 19th @10:00pm; Wed, Feb 23rd @6:40pm | Culver Plaza Theatres: 9919 Washington Blvd. Culver City, CA 90232* | dig deeper…

LA WEEKLY Recommendations : Pan African Film Festival 2011*

Hip-hop cultural critic–turned-filmmaker Dream Hampton‘s Black August (U.S.) is an engrossing critique of the creation and incarceration of America’s political prisoners (in this case, African-American political activists). The film is deft and fast-moving, and Hampton shrewdly introduces the subject by having Dave Chappelle function as a kind of clueless Everyman, explaining the historical meaning and connotations of the term “Black August” by first admitting he only recently heard the term, before breaking down its significance: Black Panther George Jackson was murdered by San Quentin prison guards in August 1971, kicking off a lineage of African-American political tragedies that would occur over the years in the month of August. With crisply shot concert footage from the annual consciousness-raising, New York–based Black August Hip-Hop Festival (performers include Mos Def, Common, Talib Kweli and Dead Prez) juxtaposed against interviews with political exiles Nehanda Abiodun and Assata Shakur, the documentary is the perfect blend of sleek professionalism and gritty substance.

power in numbers – it’s amazing the scare tactics that are used against peoples freedom. it started with communication being cut, now they’ve cut the water supply to the people. what scares them (government) the most is when we unify and what scares me the most is the large number of death/pain occurring to the innocent, the young and old alike, to the sick and to the weak that emerges from the opposition of that unification. freedom and peace is what I repeat. true change. all power to all people. stay woke*

“Detroit Summer”/”Emergence”

Invincible and Waajeed

Produced by EMERGENCE

After several months of anticipation, two of Detroit’s most visionary hip-hop figures, Invincible and Waajeed, are finally releasing their single, “Detroit Summer” b/w “Emergence”. The passionate two-song project is not only being put out digitally and in limited edition 7” vinyl format but it’s also being launched with a powerful double music video as well.

This stunning visual representation of the songs was shot on-site during the historic Allied Media Conference and United States Social Forum this past June in Detroit. The video also documents the Detroit Summer Live Arts Media Project youth program, in which Invincible is heavily involved.

The “Detroit Summer”/”Emergence” music video debuts August 10th, simultaneously with the single release, showcasing the true passion both artists and EMERGENCE in-house video director El Iqaa put into the project.

This is far bigger than just Hip-Hop. “Detroit Summer” is not just a season, and its not just about a youth-focused organization in Detroit – the song is about a feeling and a movement. “Emergence” isn’t just the b-side, and it’s not about Invincible’s media company of the same name, but rather the dawning of a new era.

Invincible is already highly regarded as a lyricist, and Waajeed as a producer, but they are collectively ascending to new levels of on both songs. Together, the duo worked to show the resilience of their communities and refute the negative national image of Detroit. As Invincible’s lyrics proclaim, “You Call Motown a ghost-town, but the city’s vibrant!”

Detroit Summer/Emergence is a prequel to the full length album Invincible + Waajeed are dropping in 2011. For this single, they did a limited edition run of 1,000 7-inch records (all of which come with a digital download code) and once they’re gone, they’re gone.

Project Luz

About the Project:

We are 20 students in Nezahualcoyotl, Mexico prepared to start our own community news project with daily broadcasts and online posts to our community (and you!) using various platforms. We already possess basic photojournalism skills thanks to Project Luz.

Over the course of 6 months, we will set up the platforms and begin news reporting, writing and publishing our stories to our worldwide audience. Our mentor, a San Francisco-based journalist, audio producer and sound artist, is ready to spend her time, energy and resources to turn us into youth journalists within our community.

Now, we just need your backing and you can watch it all unfold!

***
Students will be informed of project success at the completion of their summer audio/photo workshop.

Budget for 20 students / 6 months includes professional equipment for every student includes SLR cameras, field recorders, microphones, headphones, laptops with editing software. Additional expenses for web designer, printer, projector, cell phones, website, housing, food, transportation.

DONATE. LIGHT. FIND. A. WAY…

Yesterday & Today.

Yesterday I saw someone write: “May the 4th be with you” I thought that was comedy. Today, I contemplate on holidays used as distractions and cover ups for the harm and suffering this country has caused and the disrespect to humanity that it continues to allow… So much hate and injustice for land that we will all eventually become. Let’s be real. Let’s be love. We are one.

Celebrate the beauty that your past, present and future contain. EVERYDAY. Give thanks EVERYDAY.

“They play it safe. Are quick to assassinate what they do not understand. They move in packs ingesting more and more fear with every act of hate on one another. They feel most comfortable in groups, less guilt to swallow. They are US! This is what we have become, afraid to respect the individual. A single person within a circumstance can move one to change, to love ourself, to EVOLVE.” -WindowSeat – ErykahBadu

++willy wonka original psychedelic boat trip!

This was/is absolutely one of the most fascinating parts of the
Original Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971) mainly due to it’s rhythmic, poetic and psychedelic feel…

-WF

“There’s no earthly way of knowing which direction we are going. There’s no knowing where we’re rowing or which way the river’s flowing. Is it raining? Is it snowing? Is a hurricane a-blowing? Not a speck of light is showing, so the danger must be growing. Are the fires of hell a-glowing? Is the grisly reaper mowing? Yes, the danger must be growing ’cause the rowers keep on rowing, and they’re certainly not showing any signs that they are slowing. AAAGGHHH!!!”
